Why is it important to each of you to publish books for children?
JLC: I think one thing a great children's book does is start a dialogue between children and parents. When you finish reading a good book with your child, that’s when the dialogue begins. I hope my books stimulate parents to talk to children about the issues the books bring up.
I think the number one reason that I write good children's books is that I connect in a very clear way with what it feels like to be a child - the good and the bad - and that's why it's important to me to keep writing.
LC: Although they're hard to do, I love these books because they really are fun to work on, and they're full of ideas for kids to explore. I love connecting with kids in this way.
Jamie and Laura, what are some of the reasons you two work so well together?
JLC: I came to HarperCollins because they published Laura Cornell's first book. She is one of the finest artists working in children's books, and it is because of the humor, lively color, zaniness, and wacky originality that comes across in her work.
LC: I love Jamie's sense of humor and her tenderness, and that her books speak to kids. It's clear she loves kids and so do I, and that's what makes me really love working with Jamie's books.
